SMSes to attend to parental supervision

CHANDIGARH: Ready to keep a tab on your college-going child? Well, you don't need the services of a spy... kids themselves are ready to keep you informed. The students of sixth semester of BE (computer science), University Institute of Engineering and Technology, have developed a system that will generate SMS alert regarding their attendance for the convenience of the parents.
With a maiden endeavour to bridge the gap between parents and teachers, Panjab University will send SMSes to parents regarding attendance and results of their wards, besides fees reminders and about any special event being organized by the department.
"We are trying to introduce the system of sending messages on the cellphones of parents from the next academic session. It is a step towards making the system transparent, as with this facility students and their parents can check the attendance in every subject at regular intervals," said UIET director BS Sohi.
Earlier, UIET students had developed a software which facilitated them to check their attendance online. The software was later bought by the Panjab University and installed in 15 departments. The latest software is already in place at the UIET department, which has collected contact details of the parents of students studying in the department. The messages will be sent to the parents through the website. Sohi said, "Presently, we have the facility of checking the attendance online which is updated on the official website of the department regularly. It's, however, not very useful to some of the parents as they are not tech savvy. We are trying to make the system as hassle free as possible."
